Peak shaving in factories—cutting demand spikes, not just kWh

What peak shaving means on an industrial tariff, how it differs from solar energy displacement, and where batteries or load control help.

Peak shaving targets short demand spikes that drive demand charges. It is not the same as replacing daytime kWh with solar.

Why plants care

A few motor starts or an evening surge can set a costly peak even when monthly energy looks normal.

Typical tools

Staggered starts, shifting non-critical work, or a BESS that covers short spikes. The right mix depends on how flexible production is.

Do not confuse goals

Solar attacks sunny-hour energy. Peak shaving attacks the tip of the demand curve. Some factories need both, sized differently.
